A mayoral candidate in Mexico's Guerrero state has lost his life in an armed attack during his election campaign. The suspect who killed the mayoral candidate was neutralized by police officers at the scene.

Jose Alfredo Cabrera Barrientos, the mayoral candidate for the city of Coyuca de Benitez in Mexico's Guerrero state, was meeting with voters in the Costa Grande region.
Barrientos was subjected to an armed attack while greeting his supporters.
Barrientos lost his life at the scene of the attack.
The suspect who killed the mayoral candidate was neutralized by police officers at the scene.
Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado reacted to the killing of Barrientos, stating, "We demand that this cowardly attack be clarified immediately and that those responsible do not go unpunished."
According to data from the non-governmental organization Data Civica, 30 politicians have been killed in Mexico since September 2023.
Voters in Mexico will head to the polls on June 2 for the presidential election as well as federal and local elections.
