Following Joe Biden's withdrawal from the US presidential race, all eyes have turned to US Vice President Kamala Harris. A report by the Wall Street Journal examines Kamala Harris's investment portfolio.
According to US federal records, Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff are quite conservative investors. They keep most of their money in ordinary index funds. As Harris runs to lead the US, American voters are watching how she manages her financial situation.
THEY EARNED HALF A MILLION DOLLARS IN 2023
According to the WSJ report, the couple earned nearly half a million dollars last year. The Democratic presidential candidate and her husband have assets and real estate in their portfolios valued between 3.6 million and 7.36 million dollars. Financial advisors said that most of their wealth, unlike that of the average American, is in retirement accounts. Furthermore, the pair's mortgage interest rate is fixed at 2.625%, a rate many Americans looking to buy a home would envy.
According to a joint tax return filed by Harris and Emhoff, the couple earned 450,299 dollars together in 2023. This income consists of the 218,784 dollar salary Harris reported earning as vice president and the 174,994 dollars Emhoff earned as a visiting professor at the Georgetown University Law Center. Approximately 6,000 dollars in income was generated from royalties on Harris's books. The pair earned 50,603 dollars in taxable returns from their bank accounts and other investments.
SHE EARNED 749 THOUSAND 484 DOLLARS IN PROFIT FROM BOOK PUBLICATIONS
Harris was also earning more from her two books published in 2019. Since their first printing in 2020, Harris has earned a total profit of 749,484 dollars.
The pair donated 23,026 dollars in 2023. They made their largest donations to California and Howard University. They also contributed to six non-profit organizations and their religious community.
Together, the two have between 1.79 million and 4.4 million dollars in their retirement accounts. This amount does not include the estimated value of the retirement savings Harris earned while working in state and local government in California.
