Netanyahu calls for a new name for the attacks he has been waging in Gaza for a year
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for his attacks—which have been ongoing in Gaza for a year, have now spread to Lebanon, and are feared to escalate into a regional conflict—to be renamed the "War of Resurrection."

During a cabinet meeting held on the anniversary of October 7, 2023, Netanyahu requested that the name "Swords of Iron," which they have used for their genocide in Gaza—now spread to Lebanon with the risk of turning into a regional war at its peak—be changed.
Arguing that this is a "war of existence," Netanyahu stated, "The War of Resurrection. I would like to officially define this war with this name."
Netanyahu claimed that they would achieve "absolute victory" by fulfilling the goals of the war, which he has modified and added to over the past year.
According to behind-the-scenes information reported by Yedioth Ahronoth, some ministers in the cabinet opposed this name on the grounds that it might resemble the "War of Independence" during Israel's establishment in 1948, which Palestinians call the "Great Catastrophe" (Nakba) due to the slaughter, displacement, and exile they have endured for generations.
Ceasefire resolutions approved by the United Nations Security Council, which the US also announced, have yet to be implemented in Israel's ongoing attacks on Gaza.
During this period, Netanyahu, who has been criticized by the Israeli public, the press, and the international community for not leaning toward a ceasefire, has insisted on "the goals of the war, absolute victory." To achieve these two, he argued as recently as September that the Israeli army's occupation of the Philadelphi Corridor on the Gaza-Egypt border was necessary.
Israel added "the safe return of its citizens evacuated from the north to their homes" to its war goals in September and launched a violent offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon last month, having previously announced that it would stop firing directly upon reaching a ceasefire in Gaza.
