New detention order for former Prime Minister Chavez
Supreme Court Judge Juan Carlos Checkley in Peru has announced that a 5-month preventive detention order has been issued for former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chavez, who is currently under temporary asylum at the Mexican Embassy in Lima.

A new development has occurred in the judicial process regarding former Prime Minister Betssy Chavez, who is accused of being complicit in the coup attempt by former President Pedro Castillo in Peru.
Supreme Court Judge Juan Carlos Checkley has ordered the preventive detention of Chavez, who is under temporary asylum at the Mexican Embassy in Lima, for a period of 5 months.
The court statement indicated that the decision was made on November 18 and transmitted to the Peruvian police and Interpol, and was announced to the public today.
SHE HAD BEEN RELEASED TO BE TRIED WITHOUT ARREST
Chavez was detained in 2023 on the grounds that she was complicit in former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo's attempt to dissolve the Peruvian Congress and stage a coup in 2022, but was later released last September to be tried without arrest. Chavez subsequently requested asylum at the Mexican Embassy in Lima, and her request was granted.
Following this development, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that all diplomatic relations with Mexico had been severed and stated that it would apply to the Organization of American States regarding whether Chavez would be granted safe passage.
Prosecutors are seeking a 25-year prison sentence for Chavez, whose trial is ongoing and who claims she was unaware of Castillo's coup attempt.
