In the budget proposal submitted to Congress by the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) for the 2026 fiscal year, $130 million in direct support was earmarked for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is spearheaded by the YPG/PKK.
The budget in question covers the SDF, the Syrian Security Forces, and the opposition Free Syrian Army (FSA). The Pentagon stated that the funds would be used specifically for logistical support for ongoing operations against ISIS, training activities, and the strengthening of prison infrastructure.
According to the budget, $65 million has been allocated for the salaries and incentives of local forces. This figure is higher than the $58.9 million in 2025 but remains below the $71.8 million level seen in 2024.
$15.6 million was allocated to the train-and-equip program. A significant decrease was observed in this item compared to 2024. While a $35 million budget was allocated in 2024, this figure has nearly halved for 2025 and 2026.
Another important element included in the budget proposal is the improvement of conditions and the enhancement of security in prisons where ISIS militants are held. Ensuring stability in the Al-Hol camp and the desert region is also among the Pentagon's priorities.
MESSAGE OF CONTINUED PARTNERSHIP
The Pentagon clearly stated that the partnership with the SDF would continue. The US Department of Defense said, "The CTEF (Counter-ISIS Train and Equip Fund) program is vital for preventing the resurgence of ISIS."
Despite the general decrease in the budget, officials stated that confidence in the SDF remains, sending the message that "this cooperation will be maintained for regional stability and counter-terrorism."
NEW MEETING WITH MAZLUM ABDI
The US Special Envoy for Syria, Thomas Barrack, is expected to hold a new meeting with SDF Commander Mazlum Abdi this week. It is estimated that the agenda of the meeting will include field planning for the new budget and the future of the cooperation.
FOREIGN FIGHTERS ON THE AGENDA
The Pentagon also reiterated that the repatriation of foreign fighters who are members of ISIS to their home countries is the "most sustainable solution." However, US officials emphasized that this goal is fraught with difficulties and requires long-term international cooperation.
The Pentagon stated that the 2026 budget aims to dismantle terrorist networks in Syria, maintain delicate balances following the decade-long civil war, and ensure stability.
