According to the statement made by NASA regarding 2024 YR4, the probability of the celestial body hitting Earth has been recalculated. The probability of the object hitting Earth, which was initially calculated at 1 percent, has been recorded as 1 in 32 in the latest calculations. It was reported that 2024 YR4 is the object with the highest probability of collision with Earth discovered to date.
The asteroid was spotted by the ATLAS asteroid observation system in Chile at the end of December 2023. NASA stated that the asteroid is approximately 40 meters high and 91 meters wide.
NASA reported that, based on the calculations made, the probability of collision may change with further research. Space scientists regularly track 'Near-Earth Objects' (NEOs) larger than 140 meters. NEOs are evaluated in terms of potential collision scenarios and their risk levels are determined.
According to the Torino scale, which NASA uses to calculate impact risks, NEOs are rated between 0 and 10. On the Torino scale, 0 indicates that there is no possibility of a collision, while 10 indicates that a certain collision will result in a major catastrophe.
2024 YR4 has become the first celestial body to receive a score higher than 0 so far. As of December 22, 2032, the asteroid has been classified in the 'level 3' category.
