The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that Nigeria is the first country to begin administering a new vaccine developed against meningitis, which has been described as "revolutionary."
According to the WHO, there was a 50 percent annual increase in meningitis cases across 26 African countries last year.
The WHO reported that the new vaccine provides protection against 5 major disease strains.
WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus stated, "The rollout in Nigeria brings us one step closer to our goal of eliminating meningitis by 2030."
In the country, 1 thousand 742 suspected cases of meningitis were identified between last October and the middle of March this year, while 153 deaths were recorded across 7 states in Nigeria.
