The number of detentions has risen following a demonstration held yesterday in London, the capital of the UK, by hundreds of people in support of the group "Palestine Action," which has been declared a proscribed group by the government. According to a statement from the London police, the number of protesters detained on charges of "supporting a proscribed organization" following police intervention against the crowd gathered at Trafalgar Square in the capital has risen to 523. The police noted that the ages of those detained range from 18 to 87.
PROTEST HELD UNDER THE NAME "EVERYONE'S DAY"
During the protests held yesterday to support the group protesting Israel's attacks on civilians in the Gaza Strip, demonstrators carried banners with slogans such as "I stand against genocide. I support Palestine Action." Some protesters also held signs with slogans defending their right to protest and opposing the US and Israel. Organized under the name "Everyone's Day" at the call of the activist group "Defend Our Juries," which fights against injustices in the UK judicial system, activists stated that they aimed to "show relentless resistance against the ban on Palestine Action."
PALESTINE ACTION GROUP DECLARED A PROSCRIBED ORGANIZATION
The Palestine Action group made a name for itself with its actions in the UK following the attacks launched by Israel on Gaza on October 7, 2023. Last June, group members who entered the Royal Air Force (RAF) Brize Norton Air Base in Oxfordshire sprayed red paint on the engines of two military aircraft, claiming they were used in operations in the Middle East.
Following this development, the UK government took action and added the group to the list of proscribed organizations as of July 5. While the move paved the way for members or supporters of Palestine Action to be sentenced to up to 14 years in prison, it was reported to the public that wearing a t-shirt or a badge bearing the group's name could result in up to 6 months in prison.
