NYPD officer İdris Güven promoted to higher rank

A promotion ceremony was held at the NYPD Police Academy, which utilizes a military-style rank system.

Güven, who has served in various roles and levels within the department for 19 years, was promoted to the rank of deputy inspector, which corresponds to the position of a 3rd-class police chief in the Turkish police system.

Speaking to AA after the promotion ceremony, Güven explained that he was born in Istanbul in 1978 and has lived in the U.S. since he was 13, stating, "We are here for a special ceremony today. For the first time in the nearly 180-year history of the NYPD, I have been promoted to the rank of deputy inspector (as a Turk)."

"AN INDICATOR OF HOW WARM THE RELATIONS ARE"

Stating that they are experiencing a happy day for his family, themselves, and the Turkish community, Güven said, "Because we are now present here as well. The fact that someone like me, who came from Turkey and spent their childhood in Turkey, has reached this rank in America is also an indicator of how warm the relations between the two countries are."

Noting that he is currently one of the high-ranking police officials in the NYPD's Criminal Investigation Bureau, Güven also wished success to the new police officers of Turkish descent serving in the NYPD.

Unlike the police system in Turkey, the NYPD uses a military rank system in the U.S. Accordingly, with this rank, Güven is in a rank bracket higher than 99.5 percent of the police officers within the NYPD, which has approximately 36 thousand personnel.

Güven, who became the first Turkish citizen to receive the rank of "captain"—which corresponds to the position of a 4th-class police chief in Turkey—in 2018, is currently the highest-ranking police officer of Turkish descent within the NYPD with his new promotion.

More than 200 police officers of Turkish descent serve at various levels in the NYPD.
