Official holiday decision for two religious holidays in California

In the US state of California, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha have been granted official state holiday status. The bill, known as AB 2017, introduced by State Assemblymember Matt Haney, has gone into effect with the signature of California Governor Gavin Newsom.
The regulation aims to provide flexibility for Muslim students and public employees on religious holiday dates. According to data from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), California is one of the states with the highest Muslim population in the US, home to more than 1 million Muslims.
Matt Haney, who drafted the bill, stated that the traditions of the Muslim community in California deserve respect, emphasizing that students and employees should not be forced to choose between their religious obligations and their school or work lives.
With this decision, California has become the second US state to recognize Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as official holidays, following Washington, which adopted a similar regulation in 2025.
