One of the astronauts stranded in space for 7 months conducts a spacewalk: They will not be able to return for at least three more months

According to a statement by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Suni Williams, one of the two U.S. astronauts stranded in space, has performed her first spacewalk after spending 7 months on the International Space Station (ISS). Williams was one of the two astronauts Boeing sent into space last year but failed to bring back.

Footage broadcast by NASA TV from the ISS showed the moments when Williams, who has been stranded on the station for 7 months along with Butch Wilmore, conducted the spacewalk.

During the spacewalk, which took place while the ISS was orbiting 260 miles (420 kilometers) above Turkmenistan, the female astronaut Williams was heard saying over the radio, 'Going outside.'

U.S. spacewalks had been suspended after water leaked from a cooling loop into the airlock of an astronaut's suit, and NASA had announced that the issue had been resolved.

SENT FOR A TEST FLIGHT, THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO RETURN FOR MONTHS

Williams and Wilmore were sent to the ISS on June 5, 2024, for a one-week test flight on Boeing's new Starliner capsule.

However, due to a technical malfunction in the Starliner, the return date for the two astronauts was postponed, and NASA directed the capsule to return empty.

It is estimated that the two astronauts will not be able to return to Earth until the end of March or early April, following the postponement of the launch date for the backup SpaceX capsule taking over the mission, and that their total time on the space station will reach approximately 10 months.
