On Tuesday, February 25, ICE teams conducted a raid on the home and workplace of Cemal and Emine Emanet in the Cherry Hill area. The couple was handcuffed and taken to a detention center where irregular migrants are held. The Turkish restaurant operated by the Emanet couple was sealed.
While Cemal Emanet was released a day later with an electronic ankle monitor, it was stated that his wife, Emine Emanet, is still being held in custody. Describing what they went through, Cemal Emanet noted that they were 'detained without any justification provided.'
Stating that he completed his master's and doctoral studies in the US, Cemal Emanet also mentioned that he worked at a religious institution in New Jersey. Emanet reported that he had applied for a green card but that his application had neither been approved nor rejected for 9 years.
Claiming that the police arrived with large weapons on the day of the incident and took them to the detention center 'just to cause suffering,' Emanet made the following statements:
''I consulted a lawyer before Trump took office. My lawyer had said that Trump would first deport irregular migrants involved in crimes, and that such a situation would not be the case for us.''
Emanet expressed his belief that they were likely victims of a complaint. The couple's lawyer stated that they are evaluating the legal dimension of the process and waiting for their applications to be concluded.
LOCAL RESIDENTS SHOWED SUPPORT
The detention of the Emanet couple caused a reaction among local residents. Neighbors gathered in front of the restaurant operated by the couple, criticizing the Trump administration's immigration policies and writing messages of support.
According to AA's report, local residents emphasized that the Emanet couple are honest and hardworking people, stating that the treatment they received was unfair. It was reported that the reaction of the local people, who oppose the sealing of the restaurant and the detention of the couple, continues.
Phrases such as 'We are with you' and 'You are not alone' were hung on the window of the restaurant belonging to the Emanet couple. Speaking to members of the press, the Emanet couple's neighbors announced that they opposed the detention process.
TRUMP'S IMMIGRATION POLICIES
The detention of the Emanet couple brought the debates regarding US President Donald Trump's immigration policies back to the agenda. The Trump administration argued that strict measures should be taken against irregular migrants. However, such practices have caused concern, especially for those waiting for green card applications and trying to complete their legal processes.
Cemal Emanet claimed that the treatment they received was an 'arbitrary practice' of the Trump administration. The couple's lawyer announced that they have initiated legal processes to have their applications concluded as soon as possible and to reunite the couple.
The fact that Emine Emanet continues to be held in custody has increased the family's concerns. Cemal Emanet called on the authorities for his wife's release. The couple's lawyer emphasized that the detention process must be conducted in accordance with the law and demanded that their applications be evaluated as soon as possible.
