In a statement issued by the South African Department of Transport, it was reported that 45 of the 46 people on the bus lost their lives, and that an 8-year-old child survived the accident with serious injuries.

The statement said, "It is alleged that the driver lost control, causing the bus to crash through the barriers on the bridge, fall off the bridge, and catch fire in the ravine below."
Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga visited the scene of the accident and promised that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted. It was stated that the bridge where the bus crashed connects two hillsides near Mmamatlakala in the Limpopo province.
