According to reports from the South Korean agency Yonhap, a plane belonging to the airline Jeju Air crashed while landing at Muan International Airport in the city of Muan, 288 kilometers southwest of the capital, Seoul.

The plane, which lost control during landing and veered off the runway, struck the wall surrounding the airport and exploded.

According to initial findings, 177 people lost their lives on the plane, which was carrying 175 passengers and 6 flight crew members.

According to a Reuters report, one of the passengers on the plane sent a message to a relative to say that a bird had become stuck in the plane's engine.

APOLOGY FROM THE AIRLINE

Kim E-bae, the CEO of the airline whose plane crashed, published an official statement on the company's website.

In his statement, the CEO said, "First and foremost, we bow our heads to apologize to everyone who trusted Jeju Air. Above all, we extend our deepest condolences and apologies to the families of the passengers who lost their lives in this accident. At this moment, it is difficult to determine the cause of the accident, and we must await the official investigation results from the relevant government agencies."

Officials stated that the accident was caused by a malfunction in the plane's landing gear, noting that the plane, whose landing gear failed to deploy on the first attempt, crashed during an emergency landing on the second attempt.

Footage broadcast on national television showed the plane attempting to land on its fuselage, failing to slow down, and crashing into the wall at the end of the runway.

179 PEOPLE ESTIMATED TO HAVE DIED

Firefighting teams extinguished the fire on the plane, which was largely destroyed by flames, and rescued 1 passenger and 1 cabin crew member. It is estimated that the remaining 179 people on the plane, which was carrying 181 people, have died.

A fire department official stated that the chances of survival for passengers were low after the plane hit the wall, saying, "The plane is almost completely destroyed; it is difficult to identify those who lost their lives. Examining the remains will take time."

Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok, who is acting in both the roles of state minister and prime minister due to ongoing impeachment processes, arrived at the airport following the accident and instructed officials to exert all efforts for search and rescue operations. Expressing his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident, Choi stated that the government would provide all possible assistance.

An emergency meeting was held at the Presidential Office, chaired by Chief of Staff Chung Jin-suk and attended by secretaries of the relevant units.

Acting Commissioner General of the Korean National Police Agency Lee Ho-young instructed police units to mobilize all resources and work in coordination with the fire department and other units.

Jeju Air CEO Kim E-bae, in his apology statement following the accident, expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and promised that they would provide all kinds of support to the victims' relatives.
