'Passengers will be weighed along with their luggage!'

Airline giant Finnair has announced that passengers will be weighed before boarding their flights. This step stands out as a measure taken to increase flight safety.

Finnair spokesperson Kaisa Tikkanen stated in a press release that more than 500 volunteer customers have participated in the weighing process since measurements began this Monday at Helsinki Airport. The airline emphasized that the weight of passengers is an important factor in calculating the total weight of the aircraft.

Officials, who stated that the total weight of an aircraft is determined by taking into account elements such as fuel, checked baggage, cargo, in-flight catering, water tanks, and the weight of passengers, expressed that this weighing is part of making flights safer. Satu Munnukka, Finnair's head of ground operations, gave assurances that passengers' weights would only be seen by the person using the scale.

THE GOAL IS TO ENSURE FLIGHT SAFETY

In the statement made by Finnair, it was noted that anonymous data regarding the average weight of passengers along with their carry-on luggage would be collected for aircraft balance and performance calculations necessary for flights to be carried out safely. It was pointed out that every aircraft has a set maximum weight to ensure a safe takeoff and that this weight cannot be exceeded. It was noted that in addition to the aircraft's own weight, fuel weight, and other factors, passenger weight is also calculated using average weights approved by the Civil Aviation Authority.

Finnair officials announced that larger-scale weighings would begin towards the end of this year and would initially be based on a voluntary basis. It was also stated that factors such as the passengers' travel class, gender, and age would be taken into account during the weighing process.

This step is seen as an important move by Finnair to increase flight safety and set standards in the industry.
