Pistachio cream exported from Turkey causes illness! Product being recalled

Pistachio cream imported from Turkey is being recalled in the US on the grounds that it has caused a salmonella outbreak. It was stated that four people who consumed the pistachio cream, which is used in ice cream and desserts, fell ill after eating the product, and an investigation into the product has been launched.

RECALL DECISION ISSUED FOR THE PRODUCT

Emek brand pistachio cream imported from Turkey has come under scrutiny during an investigation into Salmonella cases seen in some cities in the US. While the product is being recalled, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are investigating the outbreak, which has spread across multiple states.

According to a report by Ekonomim, the FDA announced that Emek-branded pistachio cream, a product sold online to wholesale distributors, restaurants, and food service outlets nationwide, has caused a salmonella outbreak in at least two states. The product, a nut butter used primarily in ice cream and other desserts, is produced in Turkey by Emek Doğal Sağlık Ürünleri İklim Gıda İnşaat San. Tic. Ltd. Şti. and imported to the US.

ILLNESS REPORTED AFTER CONSUMING THE PRODUCT

As of May 19, four people, three of whom are in the north-central states, reported that they fell ill after eating the affected product. The FDA published the warning in a post updated on June 13. The FDA also announced that it is working to determine "whether other lots or products from this firm are affected." According to the FDA and CDC, individuals who fell ill due to the product have been reported in two states so far.

PISTACHIO CREAMS RECALLED

The FDA is recalling Emek brand Pistachio Cream sold in 5-kilogram white tubs. The FDA announced that the expiration date of the recalled cream is October 9, 2026, and the production code (PNO:) is 241019.

Salmonella or salmonellosis is a bacterial infection caused by salmonella bacteria that leads to diarrhea, fever, and stomach pain. The salmonella bacterium, which lives in the intestines of animals and humans, is excreted through feces and contaminates food and beverages.

The most common symptoms of salmonella infection, which is seen more frequently especially in the summer months, are diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. It can be fatal in people with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms usually appear 12–72 hours after consuming the contaminated product. While most people recover without treatment, hospital care may be required in some cases.

It is stated that pregnant women are at higher risk for salmonella. Consumers experiencing symptoms are advised to consult a healthcare facility.
