Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that he will visit Turkey next week. Stating that Ankara should take a more active role in the regional stabilization process, Tusk drew attention to the importance of cooperation with Turkey. Evaluating Turkey's role in European security at the European Union (EU) leaders' summit he attended in Brussels before the visit, Tusk called for cooperation for European security.
During Tusk's visit, Turkey's mediation efforts in the region, as the country with the second-largest army in NATO, will be discussed. In particular, Turkey's influence on the peace process in the Russia-Ukraine war will be addressed.
The Polish Prime Minister, who emphasized that Turkey is a key actor in ensuring regional stability, stated the following:
''Turkey is an important ally for Europe's security. Ankara needs to take more responsibility.''
European leaders met in Brussels on March 6-7 to discuss the defense of Ukraine. While France and the UK brought up the option of sending troops to Ukraine, Tusk opposed the option of sending troops to the region.
''THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS UKRAINE'S DEFENSE''
Tusk's visit comes after US President Donald Trump's decision to suspend military aid to Ukraine. The Polish Prime Minister stated that Ukraine remaining an independent and pro-Western country is of vital importance for Europe's security.
Confirming the US decision to stop aid to Ukraine, Tusk added the following:
''In an environment of political turmoil and chaos, the most important thing is that Ukraine can defend itself. Anyone who questions this fact contributes to Putin's victory. The American side has announced that it has suspended aid to Ukraine and has begun to lift sanctions against Russia. Information from the border and developments at our logistics hub confirm these statements.''
In a speech in Brussels, Tusk stated that Europe must rearm more quickly, intelligently, and effectively against Russia. Tusk noted that France's proposal to expand Europe's nuclear deterrence should be taken seriously.
