Prison sentence for Nadine Menendez, wife of former US Senator Menendez

Nadine Menendez, the wife of former US Senator Bob Menendez—who is known for his anti-Turkey stance and was sentenced to 11 years in prison for corruption and bribery—has received her sentence after being found guilty by the Manhattan Federal Court last April in a case involving her role in her husband's crimes. US District Judge Sidney Stein sentenced 58-year-old Nadine Menendez to 4.5 years in prison.

"SHE WAS AN OBEDIENT WIFE"

Prosecutors had argued that Nadine Menendez played a critical role in the conspiracy and requested that Judge Stein sentence her to at least 7 years in prison. Her lawyers, however, argued that their client was acting under her husband's instructions and suggested that a sentence of just over one year would be appropriate. In a petition submitted to the court on August 22, Nadine Menendez's lawyers stated, "Nadine was not an elected politician, a prominent member of her community, or a businesswoman; she was an obedient wife."

Nadine Menendez was found guilty on all 15 counts she faced, including bribery, honest services fraud, and conspiracy to have a public official act as a foreign agent.

SENTENCED TO 11 YEARS IN PRISON

Former Democratic US Senator Bob Menendez was accused of abusing his power to assist several businessmen from New Jersey and the Egyptian government. It was alleged that in exchange for these activities, Menendez received financial gains, including gold bars, cash, and a luxury car. In the corruption and bribery trial that followed, Menendez was found guilty on all 16 counts, including obstruction of justice by pressuring investigations and acting on behalf of a foreign country. Following these developments, Menendez resigned from his position in the Senate and was sentenced to 11 years in prison by the court. Menendez became the first US senator to be found guilty of acting as a foreign agent.

It was alleged that Nadine Menendez played a role in controlling the illegal money obtained through bribery and in conveying requests from Egyptian officials to Bob Menendez. The trial of Nadine Menendez, who was originally scheduled to appear in court alongside her husband Bob Menendez, had been postponed due to her cancer treatment.
