Prison sentence for priest who committed sexual abuse
It has been reported that the Vatican's court of appeal has overturned the acquittal handed down by the court of first instance and sentenced priest Gabriele Martinelli, who was accused of sexual abuse, to 2.5 years in prison.

According to a report in the Vatican's official publication, VaticanNews, the Vatican Court of Appeal re-examined the case of priest Gabriele Martinelli, who was accused of sexually abusing a child at a Catholic Church-affiliated school between 2008 and 2009 and was acquitted in 2021 due to lack of evidence, following an appeal by the victim's side.
The court of appeal overturned the acquittal of Martinelli and ruled that the 31-year-old priest was guilty.
COMPENSATION CLAIM REJECTED
While Martinelli was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison and a 1,000 euro fine, the court of appeal did not accept the compensation claim made by the victim of the abuse.
It was noted that the situation of another priest, Enrico Radice, who was accused of aiding and abetting priest Martinelli in the court of first instance and was acquitted, was also examined.
On the other hand, the Italian press also wrote that the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office had made similar accusations against the two priests.
Sexual abuse incidents within the Church continue to be one of the issues causing headaches for the Catholic Church.
