Two marches planned to be held in Rome, the capital of Italy, on October 5, 2024, to show support for Palestine have been banned by the Rome Police Headquarters. According to reports from the Italian news agency ANSA, the Committee for Public Order and National Security, chaired by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, emphasized in its assessment that these marches could create potential tensions as they coincide with the anniversary of October 7, 2023.
The ban decision was shaped by demands from the Jewish community in Italy and some right-wing politicians to cancel the marches. In a statement on September 13, Piantedosi said, “We will allow legitimate criticism of the Israeli, Palestinian, or Italian governments. However, we will not allow events organized to celebrate massacres.”
Similar bans have been implemented in previous years. For instance, pro-Palestine demonstrations that coincided with International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27 were also banned following pressure from the Jewish community. Despite this, thousands of people gathered in Rome that day to protest both the demonstration ban and Israel's attacks on Gaza.
It is noted that October 7, 2023, is perceived as a sensitive date in Italy as it marks a significant turning point in the Palestine-Israel conflict. Therefore, the banning of the October 5 marches is considered a precautionary measure to address security concerns and maintain social order.
