Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman made a statement to the press after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed left her official residence.
According to local media, Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that an interim government would be formed in the country and stated that "there will be no need for martial law" if the demonstrations and acts of violence subside.
Promising to conduct an investigation into the deaths of protesters during the violence in the country, Waker-Uz-Zaman said, "We have decided to form an interim government after having a productive discussion with all political parties. We will now meet with the President of Bangladesh, Mohammed Shahabuddin, to resolve the situation."
General Waker-Uz-Zaman also called on Professor Asif Nazrul from the University of Dhaka's Faculty of Law to issue a statement requesting that students end the protests.
