Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a phone call to discuss the Ukraine crisis. Kremlin Foreign Policy Advisor Yury Ushakov told reporters in Moscow that the call lasted approximately one hour.
Ushakov described the conversation as "constructive" and "sincere." Stating that the contacts held by Trump's special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Moscow and Kyiv were evaluated during the call, Ushakov said the American representatives' visits were viewed positively.
The Kremlin official stated, "The visits of the American representatives were evaluated positively. Work will continue through these and other channels." Ushakov refrained from sharing details, noting that the conversation was confidential.
According to Ushakov, Trump expressed his desire for the Ukraine crisis to be resolved in a short time and stated that this could positively affect the general course of Russia-US relations. The Kremlin advisor said that Trump specifically pointed to expectations for improvement in trade and economic relations.
PARTIES REACHED AN AGREEMENT
Stating that Putin also appreciated the US initiatives toward resolving the crisis, Ushakov noted that the Russian leader provided information to Trump regarding the situation on the ground. It was stated that steps Washington could take to end the conflicts as soon as possible were also on the agenda during the call.
Europe's approach to Russia was also discussed during the phone call. Asserting that it was emphasized that Russia has no plans to attack Europe, Ushakov claimed that the "Russian threat" rhetoric is being used in Europe to increase support for Ukraine and military spending.
It was also announced that the parties agreed to continue work on humanitarian issues, including prisoner exchanges. Ushakov further conveyed that Putin appreciated Melania Trump's role in the process of reuniting Russian and Ukrainian children with their families.
