Putin: “Nationalism is the first stage of Nazism”

Russian President Vladimir Putin used striking expressions in his statement emphasizing the difference between nationalism and patriotism. Putin said, “Nationalism, unlike patriotism, is the first stage of Nazism. Loving one's country does not mean hating others. However, nationalism is fueled precisely by hatred for other countries and peoples.”

Putin made this statement at a public forum titled “Geography of Thought: Great Russia” held in Moscow on April 25, 2024. Meeting with young participants, the Russian leader gave a speech on national identity, history, and values. Describing nationalism as a “toxic ideology,” Putin advocated for an understanding of patriotism that unites rather than divides peoples.

“What is important for us is to protect our own culture, history, and language. But this does not mean belittling other nations. On the contrary, respect for other peoples is a part of true patriotism,” he stated.

These remarks by Putin drew attention in the international public sphere, especially at a time when relations with the West are tense. Experts evaluate these words of Putin as an ideological message directed at both the Russian people and the global public.
