It has been reported that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan offered to mediate on the Ukraine issue to Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he met yesterday in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, as part of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.
RESPONSE FROM THE KREMLIN
A clear response regarding this statement came from the Kremlin. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, when asked by the press whether Erdoğan would act as a mediator, replied, "No, that is impossible." The Russian Tass news agency did not provide details regarding the reasons for the Kremlin's objection.
MEDIATION HAD BEEN CONDUCTED PREVIOUSLY
Turkey had undertaken a mediation role in the signing of the grain corridor agreement, which remained in effect for about a year between Russia and Ukraine following the war that began in February 2022. Peace talks between the two countries were also held in Turkey, but the initiatives did not yield results.
