Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov calls for emergency UN Security Council meeting following downing of Russian plane

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has announced that they have called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) following the downing of a Russian plane.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made statements to journalists at the UN headquarters in New York.

Stating that he hopes France, the current president of the UNSC, will fulfill its duties, Lavrov argued that the UNSC must convene urgently.

Lavrov stated that they have requested the meeting to take place today and expressed that they expect Ukraine to explain why it shot down a plane that was also carrying Ukrainian prisoners.

DOWNING OF THE RUSSIAN PLANE 

The Russian Ministry of Defense had announced that a Russian plane carrying 74 people, including 65 Ukrainian prisoners, was shot down by a rocket by Ukraine.

The statement, which recalled that the plane carried a crew of 6, 65 Ukrainian military personnel for a prisoner exchange, and 3 Russian military personnel accompanying them, reported that the crew and all passengers on the plane lost their lives.
