Russian Lieutenant General Nikolai Mikhaylenko was killed in a clash in the countryside of Latakia, Syria. The Governor of Sevastopol announced that Lieutenant General Nikolai Mikhaylenko had been killed and that a funeral ceremony was held for him in Sevastopol, Crimea, stating, "Nikolai Mikhaylenko died during special military missions in the Syrian Arab Republic."
The Russian press reported that Mikhaylenko died during a clash with members of the terrorist organization ISIS in the Latakia countryside while conducting operations to rescue some kidnapped Russian soldiers.
Russia, which has supported the Damascus regime in the civil war that began in Syria in 2011, maintains a military presence at the Hmeimim Air Base in Latakia and the Logistics Support Center in the city of Tartus.
