The Yamalo-Nenets Prison, where imprisoned Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny was serving his sentence, announced the news of the opposition leader's death.
In a statement published on its website, the Federal Penitentiary Service stated that after taking a walk on Friday, Navalny "felt unwell" and "lost consciousness almost immediately." It was noted that medical staff were called after the opposition politician fell ill, but they were unable to resuscitate him.
Meanwhile, it was announced that efforts are underway to determine the cause of death.

Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov responded to journalists' questions regarding Navalny's death and stated that the Kremlin has no information regarding the passing of Navalny. Peskov stated that the Federal Penitentiary Service is conducting an investigation into the causes of Navalny's death within the framework of specific rules and that no special instructions are needed for this. He also added, "Doctors will conduct the necessary examinations," and noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been informed about the matter.
The Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) announced that imprisoned opposition figure Alexei Navalny died in prison. In the statement from the FSIN, it was noted that Navalny, who was held at Penal Colony No. 3 in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, saw his health deteriorate and lost consciousness. The statement included the following: "The necessary medical interventions performed on Navalny did not yield positive results. Doctors confirmed his death. The cause of death is being investigated."
Navalny's aide, Leonid Volkov, stated that the Russian authorities have published a confession that Navalny was killed in prison, and noted that there is no way to verify this or prove it to be false.
