Severe 'Geomagnetic Storm' expected in the Northern Hemisphere

In a statement released by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), it was reported that due to explosions on the Sun's surface, a "Geomagnetic Storm" of this intensity could occur for the first time since 2005.

In statements from NOAA and the US Space Weather Prediction Center, it was noted that "A severe (G4) geomagnetic storm is likely to occur later today and is highly likely to continue through the weekend."

The statement, which noted that the exact timing of the geomagnetic storm expected to affect the Northern Hemisphere has not yet been clarified, shared information that the storm could begin starting today and "could affect satellite communications and power systems."

"A LARGE SUNSPOT CLUSTER"

Scientists, who stated that auroras could be observed in the US states of Alabama and Northern California due to the storm in question, emphasized that these are rare, recalling the severe geomagnetic storm that occurred on the Sun's surface in 2005.

It was determined that the source of the geomagnetic storm resulting from the explosions on the Sun is a "large, complex sunspot cluster" called "Region 3664," which covers an area 16 times the size of Earth.

WARNING ISSUED

In the NOAA statement, drawing attention to the potential effects of the storm approaching Earth, it was noted that "widespread voltage control problems could arise" and that "drag, tracking, and orientation problems" could be experienced in satellites in orbit.

It was noted that disruptions could occur in satellite navigation systems and radio receiver frequencies due to the storm in question, that outages lasting for hours could be experienced, or that some similar devices might not work at all.
