US Senator for Vermont Bernie Sanders made significant statements on social media regarding the rising tensions between Israel and Iran. Directly targeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Sanders argued that it was Israel that ignited the fuse of the war.
In his post, Sanders stated the following:
“Netanyahu started this war by attacking Iran. He deliberately sabotaged US-Iran nuclear negotiations by killing Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Ali Shamkhani. The US must not be dragged into another illegal war by Netanyahu, either militarily or financially.”
Senator Sanders noted that the Israeli government under Netanyahu's leadership is further deepening the existing crises in the region and that targeting the diplomatic process between Iran and the US damages hopes for peace.
This move by Sanders has drawn attention as one of the rare voices in the US, across both Democratic and Republican circles, opposing the unconditional support given to Israel.
