South Korea responds to Trump's North Korea remarks: 'We hope for meaningful dialogue'

The South Korean Presidential Office responded to US President Donald Trump's remarks regarding the reduction of joint Seoul-Washington military exercises, which he made in reference to his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.
The statement emphasized that South Korea and the US maintain a strong joint defense posture through exercises and training. The Seoul administration stated, "We will continue to coordinate on the necessary details in the future as well."
South Korea expressed its hope that the friendly relationship between Trump and Kim would pave the way for "meaningful dialogue" between Washington and Pyongyang. The statement noted that the government is closely following Trump's social media posts.
The Seoul administration also assessed, "Within the framework of close cooperation between South Korea and the US, we will take on a guiding role in the process and make every diplomatic effort."
EXERCISES AND IRAN TOPIC
In his post on the Truth social media platform, Trump stated that he has a "very good" relationship with Kim Jong-Un and expressed that he is not pleased with the US participating in joint exercises with South Korea.
Referring to the Ulchi Freedom Shield Exercise that South Korea and the US will conduct in the region between August 17-27, Trump stated that it was too late for cancellation and announced that he had instructed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to "significantly reduce" the exercises.
Trump argued that the exercises are costly and send an "inappropriate and hostile signal" to North Korea. He also criticized the South Korean administration for not supporting the US on the denuclearization of Iran.
The South Korean Presidential Office, regarding the Iran topic, reported that they are actively participating in international efforts to restore the ceasefire in Tehran and ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The statement indicated that close discussions are being held with the US on practical and military contribution possibilities, taking into account the defense posture on the Korean Peninsula and internal legal procedures.
