South Korean intelligence releases assessment on Kim Jong-un's potential son and succession process

The South Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS) has shared its latest assessment regarding North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's family structure and the potential succession process. The agency stated that it is working to clarify whether Kim has a son, but maintained its current assessment that his daughter, Kim Ju-ae, is the most likely individual to succeed her father as leader.

In its statement, the NIS noted that it is investigating whether Kim Ju-ae has an older brother. However, the intelligence agency argued that "under current circumstances, even if such a person existed, they would not be the successor to their father." The agency also claimed that Kim Jong-un has "another younger child whose gender has not yet been confirmed."

Assessments in the South Korean press suggest that 42-year-old Kim Jong-un is still young to explicitly declare a successor, and that such a move could weaken his absolute authority. The fact that leadership transitions in North Korea occur within the family, combined with the opaque nature of the process, keeps succession debates constantly on the agenda for outside observers.

Since her first appearance in North Korean state media in 2022, Kim Ju-ae has appeared alongside her father at numerous events, including military parades and missile tests. This visibility has strengthened interpretations that the Pyongyang administration is consciously introducing the young girl to the public.

In its January 2024 assessment, the NIS had also described Ju-ae, believed to have been born in 2013, as North Korea's "most likely successor." Kim Jong-un's visit to a symbolically significant family monument with his daughter on January 1st had also brought the discussions about Ju-ae being highlighted as a potential heir back to the forefront.
