Spain and Portugal summon Israeli ambassadors to their Foreign Ministries

Following Italy and France, Spain and Portugal have also summoned the Israeli ambassadors serving in their countries to their Foreign Ministries after the Israeli army opened fire on a foreign delegation, which included a Turkish diplomat, visiting the Jenin Refugee Camp in the occupied West Bank.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares stated, "In response to the unacceptable fire opened by the Israeli army during the visit of Spanish, EU, and other countries' diplomats, we have officially summoned the Israeli Chargé d'Affaires in Madrid. We demand an explanation and accountability. We offer our full support to the diplomats of the Spanish Consulate in Jerusalem."

Israel had recalled its ambassador to Spain a year ago following Spain's recognition of the Palestinian state.

In a statement issued by the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was stated that the Israeli Ambassador to Lisbon was summoned to the Foreign Ministry due to the fire opened on the diplomats.

CONDEMNATION FROM TURKEY, EGYPT, AND GERMANY

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "We condemn in the strongest terms the opening of fire by Israeli soldiers on a group of diplomats, including an official from our Consulate General in Jerusalem, during their visit to the city of Jenin. This attack, which endangered the lives of the diplomats, is another example of Israel's systematic disregard for international law and human rights. Targeting diplomats is a serious threat not only to individual safety but also to the environment of respect and trust that forms the basis of relations between states. The incident must be investigated immediately, and those responsible must be held accountable. We call on the international community to condemn this dangerous act in the strongest terms and to take concrete steps to end Israel's shield of impunity."

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated that it condemned the incident "in the strongest terms," noting that the fire opened "violated all diplomatic norms."

The German Foreign Ministry stated that it strongly condemned the fire and called on Israel to launch an investigation. The ministry also announced that Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul would raise the incident during his meeting with his Israeli counterpart, Gideon Sa'ar.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot had announced that the Israeli Ambassador to France would be summoned to the Foreign Ministry, saying, "Fire was opened by Israeli soldiers during a visit one of our diplomats was making to Jenin. This is an unacceptable situation. The Israeli Ambassador will be summoned to provide an explanation. We give our full support to our representatives on the ground and their extraordinary work under difficult conditions."

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani had also announced that they would summon the Israeli Ambassador to Italy to the Foreign Ministry due to the fire opened on the diplomats.
