Spanish PM Sanchez's brother appears in court: Allegations of political favoritism

David Sanchez, brother of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, has appeared in court as part of a case opened following allegations of corruption and influence peddling directed at him.

In the preliminary hearing held today in the city of Badajoz, Sanchez, who is known for his career as an artist, appeared alongside 11 other defendants accused of similar charges.

During the opening session of the trial, defense attorneys harshly criticized the grounds for the investigation and requested that the case be dismissed.

"The accusations are based on flimsy foundations"

Sanchez's lawyer, Emilio Cortes, argued that the alleged crimes had reached the statute of limitations. According to reports in the Spanish press, Cortes stated that the accusations were based on "flimsy foundations" and described the case as a "fishing expedition" conducted for political purposes based on baseless media claims. Cortes also alleged that the mass examination of his client's emails constituted a violation of rights.

Other defense attorneys also filed objections aimed at distancing their clients from the charges. The lawyers further noted that they had no information regarding whether there was any irregularity in the appointment of Sanchez, who is the target of the accusations.

Judge Jose Antonio Patrocinio, who is presiding over the case, stated that the proceedings could extend until mid-June. It was noted that this schedule could overlap with the testimony planned for former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero as part of a separate corruption investigation, potentially increasing political pressure on the ruling Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE).

3-year prison sentence requested for Sanchez

While prosecutors and defense attorneys have requested acquittal, private plaintiffs are seeking a 3-year prison sentence for David Sanchez and former PSOE Extremadura regional leader Miguel Angel Gallardo. Spanish sources stated that the case was opened following a criminal complaint filed by the right-leaning Spanish non-governmental organization Manos Limpias.

The case is based on allegations that Sanchez was unlawfully appointed to a high-level management position at the Badajoz Provincial Council in 2017. Within the scope of the file, it is being investigated whether Sanchez's appointment as the coordinator of musical activities for local conservatories met legal requirements and whether this decision involved political favoritism due to family ties.

This development comes at a time when pressure on Prime Minister Sanchez's government is mounting. Yesterday, Spanish security forces conducted an operation at the PSOE's headquarters in the capital, Madrid, as part of an investigation into alleged disinformation campaigns targeting anti-corruption judicial authorities. In this context, various documents were requested from party officials.

Accusations against former PM Zapatero and Sanchez's wife

Last week, former Prime Minister Zapatero, known for his closeness to Sanchez, was officially named a suspect in an investigation into a 53 million euro state bailout package provided to an airline during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is also known that Pedro Sanchez's wife, Begona Gomez, is facing a separate corruption investigation. Prime Minister Sanchez has assessed that these investigations and the accusations against his brother are politically motivated.
