Special Counsel overseeing Trump's cases resigns
Special Counsel Jack Smith, who oversaw federal cases regarding President-elect Donald Trump's alleged interference in the 2020 presidential election and the retention of classified government documents at his Florida estate, has resigned from his post.

Smith's resignation was noted as a footnote in a court filing.
In a court document regarding whether to release a report covering the findings of the case against Trump, it was stated: "The Special Counsel has completed his work and submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025, and departed the Department of Justice on January 10."
Special Counsel Smith had charged Trump in the case he opened in Washington, D.C., for his efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat.
Trump, in his pre-election rallies, had stated that he would immediately fire Smith upon returning to office.
Meanwhile, the federal case in which Trump was accused of keeping classified government documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida after his term at the White House ended was dismissed last July.
