Strike at Ford's Cologne plant: Thousands of workers stand against layoffs

Workers at the Ford factory in Cologne, one of Germany's oldest plants which has been in operation since 1930, have gone on strike. The decision was made after it was announced that nearly 3,000 workers would be laid off at the facility, which employs 11,500 people.

THEY HAD ANNOUNCED THEY WOULD LAY OFF 2,900 PEOPLE

Workers at the Cologne plant, the European headquarters of the US-based automotive manufacturer Ford, went on strike against the factory management's plan to reduce the workforce by 2,900 people by 2027. It was stated that the strike, which the workers began with the early shift at 04:30 following a call from the IG Metall union, will continue on a rotating basis until tomorrow morning's shift.

PRODUCTION HAS COME TO A STANDSTILL

It was noted that production lines at Ford's Cologne plant came to a standstill as of this morning following the majority of workers joining the strike at the union's call.

The workers, including many of Turkish descent, aim to increase pressure on the company during negotiations with the Ford factory, which plans to reduce its workforce by 2,900 people by 2027.
