Taiwan's indigenous submarine succeeds in first dive test

Taiwan has taken a significant step in its indigenous submarine development project, which it has been conducting to enhance maritime security and strengthen its position against potential military threats. The long-awaited submarine, named Narwhal (Hai Kun), successfully passed planned tests on Thursday morning by diving to a depth of 50 meters off the coast of Kaohsiung for the first time.

The test dive in question began around 11:00 AM at Kaohsiung's Second Harbor under the supervision of CSBC Corporation Taiwan, navy representatives, and port authorities. During the shallow-water dives, the submarine's watertight integrity, underwater stability, and the compatibility of its ship systems were checked. The submarine is expected to be delivered to the Taiwan Navy in June, and this test is considered one of the most critical stages.

Military technology enthusiasts and local residents who gathered at the port to watch the Narwhal's dive supported the project by chanting, "Go Narwhal! Go Navy!" While observers reported that the Narwhal's tests will continue in the areas between Kaohsiung Port and Zuoying, the technical success has not yet been reflected in official statements from the Taiwan Ministry of National Defense.

As China's claims over Taiwan and its military pressure have escalated recently, Taiwan's focus on such defense projects carries great strategic importance. Warnings from Washington are also noteworthy in this context. In his speech at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping views Taiwan as his own political "legacy project" and expressed that Beijing will maintain its determination regarding its claims on the island.

According to military analysts, the Narwhal's successful entry into the water not only increases Taiwan's defense capability but also opens the door to a new era in the course of tensions between China and the island.
