Tension in the Gulf of Oman: US Navy fires on Iranian ship

US President Donald Trump stated in a post on social media that the USS Spruance, a guided-missile destroyer belonging to the US Navy, warned the Iranian-flagged cargo ship Touska, which was navigating in the Gulf of Oman, to stop.
Trump noted that the ship continued on its course despite the warnings, stating, "The Iranian crew refused to listen, so our navy ship stopped them by punching a hole in the engine room. The ship is currently under the supervision of the US Marine Corps."
Trump's post also included the claim that the Touska ship in question was on the US Department of the Treasury's sanctions list due to past illegal activities. The US President announced that search and inspection procedures have been initiated.
This development has brought the increasing military activity and tension in and around the Strait of Hormuz back to the agenda. The long-standing crisis between the US and Iran occasionally sees hot contact in maritime activities as well.
