The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that as part of an operation launched on February 28, an Iranian warship was targeted at a port in Chabahar in the Gulf of Oman. Satellite imagery revealed that the ship sustained heavy damage and was severely compromised.

In satellite photos released following the conflict, thick smoke was seen rising from the warship, which was docked at Iran's Konarak naval base. It is noted that the images point to the extent of the damage the ship sustained.

There are some uncertainties regarding the precise details of the vessel. Analyses have led to differing interpretations as to whether the struck ship was of the Jamaran or Alvand class. Military experts state that the available satellite data is insufficient to definitively identify the ship's class.

The US Central Command announced that three American soldiers lost their lives and five soldiers were seriously injured as part of the operation, dubbed "Operation Epic Fury." The statement also noted that some military personnel were treated for minor injuries and preparations are underway for their return to duty.

While CENTCOM pointed out that the course of the operation is constantly changing, it announced that the identities of the fallen soldiers would not be shared with the public until official notification has been made to their families.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

The US and Israel had launched a comprehensive military operation against Iran on February 28, while negotiations between Tehran and Washington were ongoing. Iran, in turn, had carried out retaliatory attacks not only against Israel but also against US bases located in countries such as Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain.

During the attacks, numerous high-level officials, including Iranian leader Ali Khamenei, had lost their lives. The Iranian Red Crescent had announced that 201 people were killed and 747 people were injured in the bombardments carried out in the country.

This latest naval operation has increased concerns that the scale of the conflict in the region will expand even further.
