Terrorist acts continue in Europe... Attack on a marketplace in France: Government declares state of emergency

A knife attack took place in the French city of Mulhouse. One person lost their life in the attack, and 5 people were injured. French President Emmanuel Macron described the incident as a 'terrorist act.' French authorities held an emergency meeting following the incident and increased security measures.

A knife attack, described as a 'terrorist act,' occurred near a marketplace in Mulhouse. It was reported that 1 person died and 5 people were injured in the attack.

It was learned that there was an existing deportation order for the suspect, who was detained at the scene. The suspect was identified as being born in Algeria in 1987.

In a statement regarding the attack, Macron expressed solidarity with the family of the deceased. Macron stated that security measures have been increased following the attack, which the prosecutor's office is treating as a terrorist act.

SUSPICION OF LINKS TO TERRORIST GROUPS

The French National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office has included the attack in its investigation on the grounds of 'murder linked to a terrorist group.' The prosecutor's office characterized the incident as a 'terrorist act.'

The French government held an emergency summit following the attack due to the possibility of similar acts occurring. It was decided to increase security measures after the meeting.

Security measures have been tightened in the region following the attack. Authorities announced that the investigation into the incident is ongoing and the suspect is being interrogated.

TERRORIST ACT IN AUSTRIA

A knife attack was also carried out by a Syrian refugee in the Austrian city of Villach on February 16. A 14-year-old youth lost their life in the attack, and 6 people were injured. Police teams arriving at the scene neutralized and detained the attacker. It was stated that the attacker was 23 years old and held refugee status.

It was learned that another Syrian refugee provided the first intervention during the attack. Eyewitnesses stated that the attacker was smiling while being surrounded by the police. Images obtained from the scene also showed the attacker smiling.

Austrian authorities launched an investigation, treating the attack as a terrorist act.

ACTS FOLLOWED THE MUNICH ATTACK

This attack came after another incident that took place in Munich, Germany, on February 13. In Munich, an Afghan refugee drove his minibus into a crowd during a march organized by a trade union. At least 28 people were injured in the attack. Police neutralized and arrested the attacker. Numerous ambulances and police teams were dispatched to the scene.

The Munich police, in a statement made via social media, did not provide clear information regarding the number of injured, but asked people with information about the incident to contact them. A witness collection point was established at the Löwenbräukeller in Stiglmaierplatz.

The attack in Austria has once again brought growing security concerns in Europe to the agenda. Authorities stated that investigations into both incidents are ongoing and that security measures have been increased.
