These two islands, which are territories of the United States, are located in the UTC-12 time zone, and thus the opportunity to celebrate the new year occurs hours later compared to the last inhabited place in the world.

Although there is no permanent population on Baker and Howland islands, the United States holds the title of the "country that enters the new year last" because they are considered official territory of the United States. Among the regions with settlements, Pago Pago, the capital of American Samoa, stands out as the place that enters the new year last.

With the global effect of time zones, celebrations are spread over a total of approximately 26 hours. This shows that while one country is welcoming the new year, people in another location are experiencing the final hours of the old year. Local times, which are set according to the international time standard UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), play a decisive role in the formation of these differences. Countries organize their own time zones to be ahead or behind UTC.

The honor of entering the new year first belongs to the Line Islands of Kiribati. These islands are located in the UTC+14 time zone and said hello to 2026 hours before the rest of the world.
