Former FBI Director and former special counsel Robert Mueller, one of the figures who left a mark on U.S. politics, has passed away at the age of 81. A statement regarding Mueller's death was made by his family, but no details were provided regarding the cause of death.
Mueller, who became widely known for investigating the 2016 presidential campaign of then-U.S. President Donald Trump regarding allegations of Russian interference—an investigation that began in 2017 and drew significant global attention—was a prominent figure. At the end of his approximately 2.5-year investigation, Mueller was unable to find evidence to directly charge Trump, and the case was subsequently closed.
Trump, in a post on his social media account, stated, "I am glad Robert Mueller is dead. He will no longer be able to hurt innocent people."
Robert Mueller began his tenure as Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in September 2001, just before the September 11, 2001 attacks. Serving in this position until 2013, Mueller played a significant role in shaping U.S. domestic security and counter-terrorism policies during this period. His term was extended by then-President Barack Obama, making him the second-longest-serving director in FBI history.
Mueller's name came to the forefront once again in the public eye, particularly with the special counsel investigation launched in 2017. As part of this investigation, Mueller was tasked with examining allegations of links between Donald Trump's election campaign and Russia. However, the investigation was concluded because the available evidence did not reach the level required to charge Trump.
MUELLER'S INVESTIGATION AND ITS AFTERMATH
Mueller's report, which scrutinized potential relationships between Trump and his inner circle and the Russian government during the presidential campaign, influenced American politics for a long time. Following the closure of the investigation, the U.S. Department of Justice appointed John Durham as a new special counsel in 2020 to examine the origins and process of the Russia investigation launched against Trump in more detail.
In the subsequent investigation conducted by Durham, it was stated that two individuals admitted to tampering with evidence and attempting to frame Trump. It was also determined that the Steele dossier, which formed the basis of the investigation, was funded by Democrats.
