The right to disconnect: Stepping away from work outside of office hours is beneficial for the economy

The UK government is taking steps to recognize the right of employees to completely disconnect from work. This move aims to prevent people from turning their homes into a constant office environment.

As reported by BBC diplomatic correspondent Jennifer McKiernan, ministers are examining models implemented in countries such as Ireland and Belgium, where the right to disconnect is recognized as a formal right.

According to this plan, the goal is to ensure that employees are not constantly disturbed by their employers and are not forced to work outside of their designated working hours.

A deputy spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office stated that this would protect the rest periods of employees:

“Good employers will see that it is necessary for their staff to switch off in order to be motivated and productive. Being 'always on' for work can harm productivity.”

According to experts, ensuring productivity is crucial for the improvement of salaries and living conditions.

In this way, the aim is to prevent the blurring of boundaries between work and personal life.

The government's plans also take into account that there may be different companies and different roles.

In Ireland, it is envisioned that employers, together with employees and unions, will establish the right to disconnect as a company policy.

Accordingly, rules are being created regarding how employees should be contacted outside of working hours. In Belgium, companies with more than 20 employees are expected to implement agreements for disconnecting from work.

In the UK, this practice will be part of a reform package that the ruling Labour Party will propose for workers' rights. Employees will be able to take legal action if these conditions are violated.
