A volcanic eruption has occurred for the 4th time in the last 3 months near the town of Grindavik on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula. Many people were evacuated from the region following the eruption, which has been described as the 'most powerful' one yet.

According to reports from the Icelandic broadcaster RUV, the volcano, which erupted around 20:00 local time north of the town of Grindavik, spewed lava.

Following the eruption near Mount Stora-Skogfell, the lava reached the walls built to protect the town of Grindavik from lava flows to the north.

Many people were evacuated from Grindavik and the tourist area of the Blue Lagoon.

 

The event, which authorities described as the "most powerful eruption," was recorded as the 4th eruption in the last 3 months.

VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS IN ICELAND

Following a series of earthquakes in Iceland, an "emergency state" was declared on November 11, 2023, due to the possibility of a volcanic eruption, and authorities decided to evacuate the town of Grindavik in the southwest of the country as a precaution.

A volcanic eruption occurred near the town of Grindavik on December 18, 2023, and those who had been evacuated were allowed to return to their homes on December 22, 2023.

Following the volcanic eruption that occurred in the same region on January 14, residents of the town were evacuated again as the lava reached Grindavik.

The 3rd volcanic eruption in Iceland in the last 3 months was recorded on February 8.
