US President Donald Trump, who frequently makes headlines with the customs duties he imposes on trade partners, has this time taken action to protect US-based technology companies.
In a post on his own Truth social media platform, Trump stated that he would fight against countries that attack US technology companies, saying, "Digital taxes, digital services legislation, and digital market regulations are designed to harm or discriminate against American technology. Furthermore, they grant incredible privileges to China's largest technology companies. This must end immediately."

Addressing countries that resort to practices that negatively affect US technology companies, Trump said, "As President of the United States, if countries that impose digital taxes, legislation, rules, or regulations do not end these discriminatory practices, I will impose additional customs duties on their exports to the US and implement export restrictions on our highly protected technologies and chips." Emphasizing that countries of the world can no longer unfairly take advantage of the US and its companies, Trump warned, "America and American technology companies are no longer the world's 'piggy bank' or 'doormat.'
