TRNC President Tatar evaluates his meeting with Greek Cypriot leader Christodoulides
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar stated that they conveyed their positions to Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides during an informal dinner in New York, adding, "It is significant that UN Secretary-General Guterres stated there is no common ground."

President Tatar, who met with Greek Cypriot Administration (GCA) leader Nikos Christodoulides at an informal dinner hosted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York, has returned to the TRNC.
In a statement made at Ercan Airport upon his return, noting that the informal dinner was productive, Tatar reiterated that formal negotiations with the Greek Cypriots would only be possible with the confirmation of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot side.
Reminding that the federation-based negotiations conducted for the last 50 years have yielded no results and that the process collapsed when the Greek Cypriots left the table in Crans Montana, Switzerland, in 2017, Tatar stated that he told his counterparts that there is no point in renegotiating with the same mindset.
Tatar stated that he conveyed to UN Secretary-General Guterres and GCA leader Christodoulides at the dinner that the insistence on adhering to UN Security Council resolutions that have been stagnant for 50 years and finding a solution in line with these resolutions is far from reality, and expressed that they would refrain from formal negotiations with the Greek Cypriots.
TRNC President Tatar emphasized that they conveyed their positions at the informal dinner in New York and stated the following:
"It is significant that UN Secretary-General Guterres stated there is no common ground. In the press conference he held after the dinner, Guterres drew attention to the fact that there is no common ground between the parties. The report by the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, also points out that there is no common ground between the parties. The report mentions the two separate positions of the two separate sides. These are important messages in diplomatic terms. The rightful position of the Turkish Cypriot side is also understood to some extent through these. Why our position is different is being understood in diplomatic circles."
