Trump: 3-day ceasefire to be declared between Russia and Ukraine

As Russia prepares for the May 9 Victory Day celebrations, marking the Soviet Union's defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II, US President Donald Trump made a remarkable statement regarding the Russia-Ukraine War. In a post on his social media account, Trump stated that a three-day ceasefire would be declared between Russia and Ukraine.

Trump noted that attacks would be temporarily halted and a prisoner exchange would take place between the parties, saying, "I am proud to announce that a 3-day ceasefire will be declared between Russia and Ukraine on May 9-10-11. Celebrations are being held in Russia as part of Victory Day. However, Ukraine also played a major role in World War II. This ceasefire will include the suspension of all kinetic activities, and both countries will also carry out a prisoner exchange of one thousand people each."

"I hope this situation will be the beginning of the end of the war"

Stating that he had previously called for such a ceasefire, Trump said, "This request was made directly by me, and I am grateful that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin have accepted it. I hope this situation will be the beginning of the end of a long, deadly, and intense war."

The US President emphasized that efforts to end the war are ongoing, adding, "Negotiations to end this major conflict, which is the largest war since World War II, are continuing, and we are getting closer to our goal every day."

Russia had declared a ceasefire on May 8-9

Russia had already declared a ceasefire with Ukraine for Victory Day. In a written statement issued by the Russian Ministry of Defense on May 5, 2026, it was announced that a 2-day ceasefire had been declared in Ukraine. The statement read, "In accordance with the decision of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces, Vladimir Putin, a ceasefire has been declared on May 8-9, 2026, in honor of the celebration of the Soviet people's victory in the Great Patriotic War. We expect the Ukrainian side to comply with this as well."
