Trump and Xi hold phone call

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone conversation during a period of diplomatic tension between China and Japan over Taiwan.

Reports in the Chinese press stated that during the call, Xi told Trump, "China and the US once fought shoulder to shoulder against fascism and militarism, and now they should work together to protect the outcomes of the Second World War." It was also noted that Xi told Trump that the return of Taiwan to China was an important part of the post-war international order.

The reports stated that Xi expressed during the call that US-China relations had gained stability and were trending in a positive direction following their meeting in South Korea on October 30, and that Xi told Trump, "Facts once again show that cooperation benefits both sides, while conflict harms both sides."

The reports also noted that Xi and Trump discussed the war in Ukraine, and that Xi reiterated that China supports all efforts toward peace.
