US President Donald Trump has signed off on another notable decision regarding customs tariffs. In a post on his social media platform Truth, Trump stated, "I am announcing that I will be imposing a 50 percent tariff on copper, effective August 1, 2025." Noting that this step was taken following a detailed national security assessment, Trump drew attention to the strategic importance of copper with the following words:

"Copper is essential for semiconductors, aircraft, ships, ammunition, data centers, lithium-ion batteries, radar systems, missile defense systems, and even the hypersonic weapons we are currently building many of. Copper is the second most used material by the Department of Defense!"

Trump evaluated this step not only as an economic necessity but also as a military and technological one. Taking a jab at former President Joe Biden, Trump asked, "So why did our stupid (and sleepy!) ‘leaders’ destroy this important industry?" and argued that the new tariff decision is a correction of the Biden administration's "flawed" policies.

"This 50 percent tariff will reverse the reckless and stupid behavior of the Biden administration. America will once again build a dominant copper industry," Trump said, concluding his remarks with the emphasis that "this period is the golden age of the US."
