Responding to questions from reporters after a signing ceremony at the White House, Trump stated that he would impose additional customs duties on Canada and Mexico tomorrow (February 1). The US President cited irregular migration, the flow of fentanyl (a narcotic substance), and trade deficits as the justification for this decision.

Trump argued that BRICS countries are 'trying to move away from the dollar' and that 'the US will not stand by and watch,' stating that these countries 'can find themselves another sucker nation.'

Trump stated that a 25 percent additional tax would be imposed on the two neighboring countries, noting the following:

'We really have to do this because we have huge deficits with these countries. The tariffs may or may not increase over time.'

When asked by reporters whether tariffs would be applied to oil imported from Canada and Mexico, Trump announced that the decision on this matter would be announced that same night.

Arguing that both countries are acting unfairly toward the US in trade, Trump used the expression, 'We don't need the products they have.'

The US is the number one trading partner for both Canada and Mexico. If Trump implements the additional taxes he claims, the economies of both countries could face the danger of a crisis.

THREAT OF ADDITIONAL TAXES ON BRICS COUNTRIES

Trump also claimed that China is sending products to the US via Mexico and causing the flow of fentanyl. The US President underlined that if BRICS countries issue their own currencies, they will impose sanctions on the countries in the organization.

Stating that he will demand a commitment from BRICS countries that they will not create a new BRICS currency or support any other currency that could replace the US dollar, Trump emphasized that 'otherwise, he will impose a 100 percent customs tariff on these countries' and that these countries will not be able to export to the US.

Arguing that BRICS has no chance of replacing the US dollar in international trade or anywhere else, Trump said, 'Any country that tries this should say hello to tariffs and goodbye to the US.'

Regarding China's exporting to the US via Canada and Mexico, Trump said the following:

'China will also have to pay a tariff for this. They need to stop sending fentanyl to our country and killing our people.'

The US President added that a decision regarding the details of the tariffs on China would be announced soon.

Chinese President Xi Jinping had announced that BRICS countries were working to create their own currency. Russia and China have reduced the share of the dollar in their bilateral trade since 2022.
