US President Donald Trump made statements to the US press ahead of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska tomorrow. Stating that he believes Putin will make a deal regarding Ukraine, Trump said, "I believe he is now convinced that he will make a deal. I think Putin wants to make a deal."
Trump, who announced that he would impose sanctions on Russia if no results come from his meeting with Putin, said that the threat of sanctions against Russia was influential in the decision to hold the meeting. Expressing that he is not sure whether an immediate ceasefire can be achieved between Ukraine and Russia, Trump said, "I don't think a ceasefire can be achieved immediately."
Stating that he has three locations in mind for the next meeting with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump noted that a second meeting is not guaranteed, but expressed that Alaska would be the most likely place for a trilateral summit. Stating that he would call Zelenskyy depending on his meeting with Putin, Trump announced that he would not call anyone if the meeting goes poorly.
"25 PERCENT CHANCE OF NOT BEING SUCCESSFUL"
Stating that border issues could be discussed in more depth at a second meeting to be attended by Putin and Zelenskyy, Trump said, "The second meeting will be very, very important. Because this meeting will be the meeting where they will make a deal."
Stating that Russia and Ukraine will make mutual concessions on borders and territories, Trump said, "However, there will be a give-and-take on borders, land, and similar issues. The second meeting will be very, very, very important. This meeting is like a game of chess. This first meeting is laying the groundwork for a second meeting, but there is a 25 percent chance that this meeting will not be a successful one."
"I WILL LET THEM"
Pointing out that making a deal depends on Putin and Zelenskyy, Trump said, "I will not negotiate their deal. I will let them negotiate their deal."
